I'm a little familiar with the Oral Story of the Priest and The Condemned Prisoner and The Water Dragon; my teacher read it to the class along with another favorite Book of Mine Wilson Rawls Where "The Red Fern Grows", I'll discuss that Book for another occasion.

All I remember from the story is that it said that one day during an ordinary day A Water Dragon came out of one of France's bodies of Water somewhere near Gargouille.

The Water Dragon appeared to be The Cause of all this Havoc to the town. First it ate the farmers crops, it's foot prints were found all in the Farmers Fields which injured the soil somehow interfering with the Planting Season.

That's when the Priest and condemned Prisoner were dispatched to kill this Water Dragon. The people didn't want too starve to death. Considering how big the Water Dragon was it didn't take the pair long for them to track the animal down.

Surprisingly in retrospect as my teacher read the story of Gargouille I was surprised to hear the animal ran from them and the two men had to give chase.

After, finally capturing the monster and wounding it; the Priest and Prisoner brought it back to the heart of Gargouille where it was subsequently killed.

Then the people of Gargouille cut off the Water Dragon's head which was then taken and mounted on a convenient Wall.

In order to commemorate the story of Gargouille and The Water Dragon. The people told the story to their children; who in turn shared the Story with the next generation.

Somehow, it went it from a simple Water Dragon too an Flying Fiery Dragon whose head couldn't burn because Fire was contained in its Head.

Unless, it's possible that there might have been two Dragon's instead of the One Water Dragon in the story. Arguably when I first heard the story of this Water Dragon; the storyteller, reading felt it was a Crocodile or Alligator sharing that the English and French hadn't known about the Alligators and Crocodile yet.

At the time I was in third grade when I heard this story so I believed her. Since I've read up on the Crusades I now know they would have known What Crocodiles were and what they looked like.

It was seemingly after, this incident in Gargouille when Gargoyle statues became so popular with The People and the added belief that Gargoyles scared off Evil Entities because they themselves were Ugly.

Anybody interested in finding out what the Water Dragon was? Read on to learn the origin of their name, their very functional purpose, and what makes a gargoyle different from a grotesque.

When gargoyles began appearing on churches throughout Europe in the 13th century, they served as decorative water spouts, engineered to preserve stone walls by diverting the flow of rainwater outward from rooftops.

This function, technically speaking, distinguishes gargoyles from other stone beasts like grotesques and bosses, although these days the term encompasses all sorts of decorative creature carvings.
